To work out genetic differences in intake, digestibility and utilization of nutrients, 24 male lambs of Sonadi and Malpura along with their crosses with Dorset and Suffolk were studied. The crosses were superior (P < 0.05) in the intake (grams/day) of dry matter, N and water, and also superior (P < 0.05) in the mean body-weight gain per day than pure-bred natives. Though not statistically significant, the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, N-free extract, digestible energy and metabolizable energy values of the feed were more in the cross-bred lambs. The N retention and water balance were better in the cross-breds. |
